Physician executive leadership

Hire a fractional CMO

Connect with physicians for part-time chief medical officer roles. Define the clinical strategy, leadership responsibilities and time commitment your company needs, then discuss the engagement directly with candidates.

Define the role before you search.

A fractional chief medical officer provides ongoing executive medical leadership on a part-time basis. The role may cover clinical strategy, care-model development, quality and safety, or clinical input into product and business decisions. Authority and accountability should be explicit in the engagement.

Your stage and objectives

Explain your business model, maturity, clinical services and immediate priorities. Identify which decisions need physician executive input and what success should look like.

Relevant leadership experience

Ask for experience aligned with your sector, such as care delivery, value-based care, health plans or digital health. Evaluate the physician’s actual responsibilities in prior roles.

Executive access and availability

Define reporting relationships, access to leadership and information, meeting cadence, expected hours and urgent decision coverage. Discuss competing commitments and conflicts.

What to include in your role.

  • Sector experience and executive responsibilities aligned with your needs
  • A realistic part-time scope and escalation coverage
  • Clear decision rights, information access and reporting
  • Contracted deliverables, compensation and review cadence

Define the time commitment and scope before negotiating a retainer, hourly arrangement or other compensation. Document any equity terms and conflicts with professional advisers. There is no universal market rate or guaranteed timeline to fill a fractional CMO role.

Find and evaluate candidates.

Post your role online. After review, matching and invitations help you connect with physicians. You choose who to interview, verify qualifications, confirm availability, agree on compensation and contract directly. ClinX Connect does not guarantee a match, hire or compliant legal structure.

Common hiring questions

How is a fractional CMO different from a consultant?
A fractional CMO usually has an ongoing executive role with defined leadership responsibilities. A consultant may advise on a project or specific question. The contract and actual work determine the relationship; the title alone does not.
Should I hire a CMO or a medical director?
A CMO often covers company-wide clinical strategy and leadership; a medical director often leads a particular program or function. Smaller companies may combine the work. Start with the decisions and duties you need covered, then choose a title and scope.
Can a fractional CMO also provide patient care?
Only if qualified and permitted for the relevant setting. Executive leadership does not automatically include treatment, prescribing, medical director responsibilities or PC ownership. Specify each duty and verify its requirements separately.
